Great for storage easy to use
It took me just a few minutes to figure it out and the transfer speeds were very fast. I’m using it to store my podcasts. Worth the money!

Speedy 512GB external hard drive by NewQ that is a bit pricy compared to SSD models
The 512 GB capacity USB drive by NewQ is made in PRC (china). The 512 GB model is $109, while the 2 TB model is $139. I would spend a few dollars more to get a big discount on the cost per gigabyte. The kit did not come with a USB-C to SuperSpeed microUSB, but does come with a USB-A to SuperSpeed microUSB (the wide connector with the computer icon). I use this drive without the app since I did not need it with my phone or computer. The white box contains a 5400 RPM mechanical hard drive, not a solid state drive. The benchmarks show the read speeds to be about 370 MB/sec while the write speeds are in the 400 MB/sec range. The built in battery does its job when connecting this to my phone since my phone’s USB port cannot power the hard drive. This is a speedy external drive.4 stars

Nice Quality Backup
I have thoroughly reviewed and professionally rewritten the text as requested:This external storage device provides an efficient solution for iPhone photo backup. The interface is user-friendly and offers rapid data transfer. While the initial setup instructions required careful review, the process was ultimately straightforward. The device demonstrates impressive battery longevity. As a first-time user of dedicated backup technology, I found the experience satisfactory and I am very satisfied with the results. Worth the Money

Works Better On The New Apple Stuff
So my girlfriend has sold her soul to Apple, being a DIY PC guy, file management is always a nightmare. This works fine on her new iPhone + iPad. Honestly, it encouraged her to just overall manage her pictures and videos more which is more of my time saved. And it connects to windows w/o going corrupt. However, I only connect drives from phones to my computer when I’m making backups, to prevent loss.I had picked this up because her old iPhone XR was so full and out of date it barely worked. However, it’s full of memories so a classic factory reset isn’t an option.I had tried a few iPhone photo sticks and backup options over time with no luck, so this was my final attempt. When it connects it works fine, the phone sees it, I get about 5 minutes of transfers before the iPhone craps out, rinse and repeat it was all backed up.So older devices, you’ll need to be vigilant, but IT WILL WORK. For newer devices, it’s like x5 the space to your hard drive, instant iPhone speed back.Good price, if it had perfect compatibility I would give it 5 stars and shoot it to the heavens.

Drive works great, but the app is annoying
Love the hard drive when I can get it to work, but not a fan of the app. The hard drive is nice and fast, works well when connected. Sadly, It does not hold charge long. And I am having problems with it dropping connection and showing nothing on the app. I am trying to see if it can be used without the app, because the app interrupts and tries to take contol when I attach other card reading devices connected to my phone. My phone has it’s own storage control, I don’t need the app to keep trying to control other readers. Note, you can only charge the device with one port and the supplied wire. It won’t charge from any other port or wire. Overall it’s a nice drive, but I really can’t tolerate the app on my phone.

Easy to Use and Peace of Mind
I have 4,773 photos and videos on my iPhone 13 Pro. I have years of precious digital photos and videos that include beloved family members that have passed on. I recently scoured through these files to find a video from 9 years ago that I couldn’t find and I believe I mistakenly deleted it at some point. Although I have now purchased additional icloud space, I want to store it on a physical drive I can access. I found this NEWQ hard drive surprisingly easy to use with the enclosed instructions. I took me just a little longer to back up because as noted in the instructions “cloud backup needs to download icloud data first”. As a first time user of a hard drive for my phone, this was easy to use and well worth the peace of mind of saving my valuable photos and videos.

It came very well packaged, on time and it works fine but not entirely once it doesn’t have app to connect to my smartphone. I don’t know whose fault is this, the only thing that I know is that I wasn’t be able to download its app from Apple Store and even from the web. I had to go on computer to transfer the stuff from my IPhone 14 Pro to the Drive. The Drive works perfectly but not as it had to be.

This is a nice little portable SSD and battery bank combo unit (a combination I haven’t seen before), that works quite well for transferring data between a phone or tablet and a desktop computer (or vice-versa). It has USB-C, USB-A and USB-Micro B (used for hard drive connectivity) ports on it. You should be aware that the drive will only connect to a computer via the USB-Micro B cable, and the computer end of that cable is USB-A. If you have a MacBook or other laptop that only has USB-C, you’ll need to get your own cable (easy to find – it is a standard), or use a hub or adapter. In order to use the drive on a phone, you’ll need to download their app, which is decidedly “OK”. It’s easy enough to use, but doesn’t have the best user interface design. It does make it easy to transfer photos and videos from your device to the drive (or vice-versa), which is probably the most common use case for most people. When you hook it up to a computer, it’s recognized as a normal external drive that you can drag and drop files to and from. The files from the phone or tablet are organized based on however you set up the folders in the app.I ran some speed tests on my computer, and included a screenshot of the results in this review. As you can see, it’s not super fast, but it’s reasonable. Certainly faster than most USB devices. On most phones, your speeds will be limited by the phone, not this drive. One of the weird things about this device is that as a both a battery bank and data drive, connectivity can be a bit confusing. You can connect it to a phone via USB and have it charge and transfer data between the app. When connecting it to a computer, you cannot do – for example – USB-C to USB-C. You have to connect to the Micro-B connector, or else the drive won’t be seen by the computer. On Android phones/devices, you can just use this is a drive. You can also do this on an iPad, and maybe on newer iPhones (with the USB-C charging port). I could not get it to work as a raw drive on my iPhone, but that’s most likely because my phone uses a Lightning connector and I don’t have a Lightning to Micro-USB cable (does anyone?). When I plugged it into my iPad, which uses USB-C, I was able to access it directly as a drive, the same as you would on any computer. I tried using it as a recording destination with Black Magic Cam, and it worked perfectly. This would allow me to record video using the camera in the iPad, then easily transfer it to my computer without needing to take up space on the iPad. I expect this would work just as well on an iPhone 15 Pro or later. Lower spec or older iPhones probably wouldn’t be good for this use case since the USB transfer speeds on them are too slow (that’s not the fault of this device, it’s Apple’s fault).Overall, this is a pretty good device. If I were to make improvements, there’d only be a few – first, I’d probably rework the app a bit to make it more user friendly. More importantly, though, I’d probably make USB-C to USB-C connectivity work in a more standard way so you could use it as a way to hook this device up to phones, tablets, etc. that support using direct storage without needing a Micro-USB cable. This would also allow them to simplify the manufacturing of the device, since they could remove at least one port. It’d also mean the device could be simultaneously used for data storage and as a battery bank (the Micro USB port cannot transfer power to the connected device) which would be incredibly useful for things like external storage of video being shot using high bandwidth apps like Black Magic Cam.This device is definitely aimed at more casual users, and works very well in that scenario. With a few tweaks, I could see it (or some version of it) being very appealing to pro or semi-pro users who are doing things like shooting video on their phones.

I love that this hard drive has a half a terrabyte of storage and will hold my photos for the forseeable future. I was getting tired of paying for cloud storage and also having multiple locations for my cherished photos and memories. It was getting hard to remember what was stored where and even with who. So having a permanent offline solution seemed like it was going to be the best solution for me. This NEWQ hard drive lets me keep it all in one place without a monthly fee. If companies go broke or cease to exist I will still have my data, and I will always know where my photos and files are. My search for a large storage device all started when my favorite app that I have used FOREVER slowly started squeezing me as far as storage size and number of devices I could access my files from in an attempt to get me to pay a monthly fee.I like that it can connect to my cell phone, computer and ipad although I find the rules regarding which cable to use a bit confusing as I have to use the USB B with the computer and the USB C with my phone. The required app to transfer photos from my phone is OK and fairly intuitive but lacks some polish. When transferring from a computer no app is necessary as it is the same as dragging and dropping files. While it is kind of cool that you can use it as a power bank and thus you don’t kill your battery while transferring large amounts of data from your phone, I don’t intend to use it as a back up power source on a regular basis. Great value for the amout of storage and it will be one of the first things I grab if my house catches on fire!

I thought this was kind of a neat concept, so I wanted to give it a try. I was disappointed to find that I needed an app to make it work. I would have liked to see a plug-and-play solution, and the app definitely needs work, but I can live with it. I wouldn’t say the device feels blazing fast in terms of transfer speeds, but it does offer 512 GB, so plenty of space.Still, I struggle somewhat to see the utility of this device. If the idea is to offload your pictures — likely some of your most precious memories — onto a single external device with no other backups, I don’t feel that’s very safe. And if I’m going to offload my photos, why not just do it onto my computer rather than an external device? However, if you’re in need of an external storage device for your phone, this unit certainly works. Just be aware that it requires an app and the app is somewhat frustrating to use.

This is rather unique external hard drive in that it is battery powered and has a couple more ports than usual including a SD card port. The device needs to be charged and includes a stiff 20” USB-A to micro USB3 cable. It does not include any other lightning, USB-C, etc cables. You have to supply your own based on the device you want to use it with. The drive exterior is fully plastic and somewhat large for what I assume is a 2.5” drive inside. Its exterior measures a little over 4.5” x 3” x 3/4”. Other portable hard drives I have used are noticeably smaller/slimmer but I suppose the addition of the battery and its ports adds some inevitable bulk. The specs on the store page mention the drive runs at 5400 rpm but it is completely silent and I have never heard it make any kind of noise when in use.I been using this device directly with my iPad Pro and iPhone. The store page mentions that it is iOS compatible and plug and play but I did not find this to be the case. When I plugged it into my IPad it displayed the “not charging” message which means whatever is plugged into the port is not supplying enough power to charge the tablet. Also the drive itself was not recognized by the iPad and did not show up in its Files app like most other connected drives typically do.You have to download an app from the App Store called “NQStorage” and using that is the only way I was able to transfer data to and from the drive. The app recognized the drive without problem and within you can select the various photos, etc you want to manage and backup. I tried inserting a SD card and similarly it did not show up in the iOS files app but did show in the drive’s NQStorage App.Adding other files doesn’t seem very intuitive. I haven’t yet been able to figure out how to transfer documents and files other than photo/video yet as they do not show up in the app as is. While I can see the one-touch album backup ability being handy for some, I do not like that I must use a 3rd party app to transfer files to first and grant it permissions vs being able to use the drive directly through the OS and it’s files app. An optional app is fine but for most of my storage usage it’s a cumbersome and unnecessary extra step/app that shouldn’t be mandatory to simply use a drive. The drive does seem to function well from a hardware standpoint but the issue is that this all feels like an expensive and dated solution to a problem that is able to be handled much better now. This would have been handy many years ago prior to affordable external SSD’s, etc and before devices had efficient file management built in.In 2024 however going by the listed price of the product when ordering, there is no way I could really recommend it. Alternatively you can get an external SSD that can store the same amount of data or more which is also smaller, faster, more durable, doesn’t require charging, works natively without any 3rd party apps, and costs less! You could also get a hub or small card reader plus a flash card, or a thumb drive, etc as other more affordable and convenient options.A bulky battery powered drive that needs an app to function is kind of a confusing option to offer in this day and age, especially considering its meager storage and expensive price. There is no real advantage to a product like this…it’s an expensive and cumbersome solution that kind of feels like you’re going from the automobile back to a horse and buggy. The product itself does what it claims but I can’t recommend it for its price considering the other options available.
